Mary Lucas Obituary

Local music legend Mary Lucas, age 97, of Zanesville, passed away Friday, April 30, 2021 at Adams Lane Care Center, Zanesville. Mary was born October 5th, 1923, the only daughter of Otto and Lena Alice Palmer Dick. She was a 1941 graduate of Hopewell High School. She married Robert Lucas later that year. Together they had 7 children, five which remain to celebrate her life. Three daughters, Sue Ann Clark (Theodore) of Glasgow Kentucky, Karen Sue Adair (Jeff) of Zanesville and Sharon Kay Cox of North Port Florida; two sons, Donald Wayne Lucas (Nora) of Bidwell, Ohio and Dick Eugene Lucas of Norwich Ohio; twelve grandchildren she adored,  Kevin Clark of Austin Kentucky, Staci Maynard (Rodney) of Cave City Kentucky, Donald Lucas Jr. of Bidwell, Ohio, Brian Lucas (Marrisa )of Forney Texas, Mike Lucas(Andrea) of Zanesville, Ohio, Sue Ann Daniels (Cauble) of Hopewell, Ohio, Rachel Hartman (Josh) of Hopewell, Ohio, Jeffrey Adair (Darci) of New Straitsville, Ohio, Billie Jo Rapol (PJ) of Zanesville, Ohio , Justin Adair of Zanesville, Ohio, David Paul of Seattle, Washington and Thomas Paul of Zanesville Ohio; thirty great grandchildren and eleven great- great grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by Robert Lucas, father of her children; a son Terry (Butch) Lucas, an infant daughter, Elizabeth Maryann Lucas; daughter in-law Roberta (Bobbi) Lucas; son in-law, Daniel Cox and grandson in-law Christopher Clark.

 

  Mary started her music career at the age of 5. She was the pianist for her high school orchestra and began teaching piano after graduation. In the early 1960s she took up organ and became professional and never looked back. She was the featured organist for Casino restaurant, Windsor’s Steak House, Zane Hotel Lounge in Zanesville, The Carousel Lounge in Buckeye Lake, The Neal House in Columbus and the Cadillac Lounge in Cambridge. In the early 1970s she moved to Gallipolis Ohio to co-manage Ward Music Store and teach music. There she started her own band, Mary Lucas and Friend’s. They played all over southern Ohio and West Virginia. In the early 1990s she moved to Laurinburg, North Carolina. She was the organist for Caledonia Methodist Church and Faith Methodist Church. While there she formed and led The Ole Time Chorus. She won Gold, Silver and Bronze medals with them and as a solo pianist at the Senior Olympics in Raleigh N.C. She returned to Zanesville in 1996 and played for White Cottage Methodist Church until she returned to her childhood church, Mt. Sterling United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing for most of the nursing homes in the area and was inducted into the Muskingum County Country Music Hall of Fame. She was a member of Post 29 American Legion.

 

Friends and family may call on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, where funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Chuck Norris officiating. Burial will follow in Mt Sterling Cemetery Mt. Sterling, Ohio.

 

 In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Genesis Hospice or to Mt. Sterling United  Methodist Church.

 

Self -provided facemasks and social distancing will be observed.
