Brian Matthew Friel passed away October 16th, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Brian is the son of Anita Friel of Zanesville and Kenneth Friel of Newark. He grew up in Ohio, Texas, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In 1993, Brian graduated from Zanesville High School and was the recipient of three college scholarships. He attended Ohio University until his health declined. In May 2006, Brian who was born with Cystic Fibrosis, received the lifesaving gift of organ donation. He was the fourth person to undergo bilateral lung transplantion surgery at Nationwide Childrens Hospital. Brian, then returned to Ohio University where he earned a degree in forensic chemistry. He was employed by a pharmaceutical company in Columbus. Brian was always enthusiastic about learning and enjoyed reading. As a three year old he was able to complete 100 piece jig saw puzzles and he was working on a 4000 piece puzzle during his last days. Brian loved cats, camping, fishing, and bowling. Brian was kind, understanding and loyal to his many friends. Brian was preceded in death by a sister, Kimberly Lynn Friel. He is survived by Paternal Grandfather, Dale H. Mautz; a brother, Dr. Jordan (Nicole Almady) Friel, and sisters, Olivia (Matt) Dresbach, Susan (Chris) Conte, Erin Justice, and Aubrey (Brian) Angus. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Nationwide Childrens Hospital, 700 Childrens Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43205 or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 740 Lakeview Plaza Blvd # 225, Worthington, Ohio 43085. Friends and family may call from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE where funeral services will follow with Doctor Jim Miller and Chaplain Tim Patton officiating. He will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park, Zanesville.
