Stephen L. Miller

It is with deep love and sorrow that we announce the passing of Stephen L. “Steve” Miller, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, and friend, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on November 8, 2025, at the age of 76.

Born on May 12, 1949, in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of the late Robert and Marjorie Miller, Steve spent most of his life in the community he loved. He attended Maysville High School, where his fondest memories were playing baseball and bass guitar in a local band, “Streaks of Gray,” bringing people together through music.

Steve proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War era. His exceptional skill and professionalism earned him commendation from his superiors, who wrote: “Sgt. Miller’s efforts and achievements have contributed greatly to SAC’s combat mission in Southeast Asia... Because of his knowledge and professionalism, Sgt. Miller has been assigned the duty of in-flight troubleshooter.”

His love of aviation continued throughout his life. A graduate of Kent State University with a degree in Aerospace Technology, he earned his pilot’s license, served as an engineer with McDonnell Douglas, and worked as an air traffic controller. He enjoyed visiting the Dayton Air Force Museum and watching air shows—especially when the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds were performing.

A man of many chapters, Steve built a life of purpose and community. He coached youth baseball, softball, and basketball, and as President of the Maysville Youth League, was instrumental in building the Avondale Ball Diamonds—fields that continue to bring joy to hundreds of young athletes every year.

After working as an air traffic controller, he embarked on a new adventure as a truck driver, crisscrossing the country while listening to country music and The Eagles. That experience led him to help start the Truck Driver Training School at the Mid-East Career and Technology Center in Muskingum County, where he was an instructor and helped countless people build new careers.

Steve eventually joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol, serving as a Driver’s License Examiner Supervisor, and retired after 21 years of dedicated public service. His career reflected the same values that defined his life—integrity, humility, and service to others.

Steve and his wife Mary shared an incredible life together—filled with travel, laughter, and love. Married for 14 years and together for 17, they made lasting memories with family and friends, including a wonderful period living as snowbirds in Florida where Steve was the neighborhood bingo caller, Christmas light organizer, owner of a boat affectionately called “The Minnow” (which only sank twice), and the kind of neighbor everyone loved to have.

Steve found joy in gardening, working in the yard, watching his grandchildren’s sporting events, and spending time with those he loved most. He was known for his quick wit, kind heart, and quiet generosity—always willing to help others without hesitation or judgment. His humor, humility, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Mary Miller; his brother David (Jane) Miller; his children Scott (Susan) Miller and Melissa (Eric) Aho; his stepchildren Missy (Donald) Faulhaber, Holly Richardson, and Andrew Richardson; three grandchildren Caleb Stallcup, Ava Miller, and Ivy Miller; six step-grandchildren Justin (Cassi) Faulhaber, Amber (Ryan) Spiker, Bebe (Alex) Gergely, Sarah (Joseph) Carter, Bobby (Brittney) Church, and Dalton Church; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

A celebration honoring Steve’s 76 years of life will be held on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 2:00 P.M. until the time of service starting at 4:00 P.M. at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville.

Full Military Honors will be accorded to Stephen by the United States Air Force in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
