Russell E. Bateman, Jr.

Russell E. Bateman, Jr., 75, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, while under the compassionate care of the staff at Adams Lane Care Center. He was born on August 24, 1950, in Zanesville, Ohio, the son of Russell E. Bateman, Sr. and Patricia (Mick) Bateman.

Russell was a proud veteran who served eight years in the Army National Guard during the Vietnam era. A hardworking and creative individual, he built a successful career as a sign painter and entrepreneur. Throughout his life, he owned and operated several local businesses, including Russ-Sign Company, AdVertech Electronic Signs and Awning, and the Good Times Bar and Grill. His artistic talents led him to pursue studies at Ohio University and the Columbus School of Art and Design following his graduation from Maysville High School in 1969.

Russell was an active member of several community organizations, including the Hilltoppers Club, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Freemasons. He enjoyed spending time with friends, attending social gatherings, and sharing his love of music. A talented DJ, Russell could often be found providing entertainment at weddings, parties, receptions, and other special events throughout the area.

He is survived by his mother, Patricia Mick Bateman; his daughter, Charmain (Scott) Warren; his son, Christopher Bateman; four grandchildren, including Desi Valentine, Logan Warren, Cameron Bateman and Christopher Bateman, Jr.; his sister, Debra (Bradley) Welker-Metz; two nephews, Brad (Barbie) Welker and Austin Welker; his niece, Aloni Welker; his great-niece, Isabella; and his longtime friends and "partners in crime," Terry Edwards and Bradley Metz, along with many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his father, Russell E. Bateman, Sr., and his brother-in-law, Greg Welker.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff of Adams Lane Care Center for the exceptional care, kindness, dignity, and compassion they provided to Russell. Their professionalism and dedication brought comfort not only to Russell but also to those who cared about him during his final years.

A memorial service for Russell will be held at BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM, with funeral services beginning at 1:00 PM and Reverend David Aldred officiating. A burial of his cremated remains will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116-7023, or the Alzheimer's Association , P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.

Russell will be remembered for his entrepreneurial spirit, artistic talent, sense of humor, love of music, and the many friendships he cultivated throughout his life. His memory will remain in the hearts of those who knew him.
