Jerry Eugene Hazen

Jerry (Jug) Eugene Hazen, 72, of Philo cruised his motorcycle right into those pearly gates of Heaven, on Monday, August 31, 2026 at his home. He was born October 11, 1953 in Zanesville a son of the late Eugene and Catherine (Roll) Hazen.

A proud graduate of Maysville High School, Class of 1972, Jerry also graduated from MAJVS, where he studied welding and agricultural mechanics. Upon graduation, he followed in his father’s bootprints and went to work for him at Gene Hazen & Sons, installing utilities, Excavation projects, oil field services and various demolition projects. Jug was also part owner of Hard Parts in Zanesville. After nearly three decades, he decided to switch gears completely and he purchased a local tavern in Newark, Ohio and rebranded it, Jugz. Jugz became more than a bar. It became a gathering place, a second home, and the setting for countless friendships, laughs, debates, celebrations, and stories that will likely get better with every retelling. Over the years, he showed his huge heart and he organized, hosted and coordinated countless poker runs and benefits. After 22 years, Jug finally did something nobody thought he would ever do—he retired. He deservedly settled into retirement after selling Jugz to his special friends, Stacy Williams and Earl Crosswhite. Jug enjoyed having all of his family in one spot, his house where many memories were made. He also enjoyed his friends just as much, living in the moment and living life to the fullest. In his younger years, Jug lived for days on the Hill with his Hilltoppers family. He always looked forward to his motorcycle trips with his lifelong friends exploring our beautiful country. As long as he had his atlas and some friends to ride along, they’d be gone for a month, sometimes longer. Jug loved to punish himself almost every Sunday, September-December by watching his beloved Cleveland Browns.

Nothing meant more to Jerry than his family. He set a solid foundation by modeling core values like respect, responsibility and love.

Jerry leaves behind many who will forever cherish his life, his stories, his laughter, his simplicity, his stubbornness, his generosity, his phone calls and all the memories he created for so many along the way. Jerry leaves behind, including his life partner and best friend, Veronica “Ronnie” Hazen; his children, Corry (Regan) Hazen, Chantae (Chad Hammer) Hazen, Casey (Danielle) Hazen, Catie (Brian) Cox; his grandchildren, Alison (Logan) Stipes, Gunner (Brooke) Hazen, Jaggar (Parkher Nicols) Kinder, Dalton (Gabrielle Gute) Hazen, Gavin Kinder, Payton Dearth, Mattie (Dylan) Webster, Emma (Easton Smith) Dearth, Sydney (Jagger Lindell) Dearth, Jackson (Emily) Hargraves, Lilly Hazen, Canon & Collins Cox; great grandchildren, Pyper, Waylon and Larson Stipes, Braxton and Hadlee Hazen, Weston Smith and Karver Webster; one sibling, his brother Rick; and numerous cousins and countless friends.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his sister in law, Violet Neal, his sister in law, Karen Hazen and a niece, Rachelle Rupe.

In lieu of flowers, the Hazen family has asked that those who wish to, make a memorial contribution to a foundation he was so proud of, that was his baby, Bikers Supporting Bikers at 420 W. Main St. Newark, Ohio 43055 and/or The Down Bikers Fund at 1246 Wayne Avenue Zanesville, Ohio 43701.

Friends and family may call from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. on Monday, September 7, 2026 at BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE ZANESVILLE, and one hour prior to services starting at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, with Pastor Mike McGuire officiating. Jerry will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery
