It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Ashley “Butch” Milstead, age 63, of Zanesville, Ohio, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on August 28, 2025, after a decades-long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
Douglas was born on August 1, 1962, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, to Darrell Milstead and Patricia Mathews Walters. He retired from the United States Air Force in 2000 after 20 years of service. During his military career, he earned two bachelor’s degrees and three associate degrees, reflecting his perseverance and dedication.
Doug was a beloved son, brother, devoted husband, and loving father whose life was marked by quiet strength, remarkable resilience, and a deep love for those closest to him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Ellen Milstead; his six children, Ashley Cedeno, Danielle (Nick) Davis, Ami (Daniel) Allan, Nicole Milstead, Julie Milstead, and Jennifer Milstead; his mother, Pat Walters; father, Darrell Milstead Sr. (Brenda); siblings, Debra, Darrell (Amy), and Susie (Sean); grandchildren, Joseph, Matthew, Alanna, Genevieve, Emilia, Aster, Edwin, and Arden. His family will continue to honor his legacy by living with the kindness and integrity he always demonstrated.
He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Ed Walters; his in-laws, Tan Gek Leng and Ho Lai Choo of Singapore; and his uncle, Charles Matthews.
Douglas made a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him and will be remembered for his gentle nature, sense of humor, and the many stories and memories he shared.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE, on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 10:00 A.M until time of service starting at 12:00 NOON. Friends and family are warmly invited to attend and celebrate Doug’s life. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
