David M. Ellis, D.P.M.

David M. Ellis, D.P.M., age 75, died on Monday, May 25, 2026 at his home of more than 40 years in Zanesville, Ohio from complications of Parkinson's disease dementia.

Dave was born on August 26, 1950 in Zanesville to James Francis Ellis and Vera Anita (Shawger) Ellis. He graduated from Rosecrans High School in 1968 as a four-year varsity letterman who excelled on both the basketball court and the golf course. After graduating from The Ohio State University and later the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, Dave eventually returned to Zanesville and established his own practice, serving the communities of both his hometown and Cambridge for over 35 years until illness forced his retirement.

You seldom had to worry about what Dave was thinking—the man would gladly give his blunt assessment of the situation (or person), whether the listener was ready or not. But in addition to weathering the occasional cutting remark, friends and family cherished the conversations they had with him. A talk with Dave, no matter what the setting or occasion, meant sharing in the wit, intelligence and integrity of the man so many people loved.

He believed that an appreciation of the arts and the close camaraderie of friends were essential to leading a fulfilling life, and dedicated his time accordingly. Dave served on the boards of the Zanesville Concert Association and the Zanesville Museum of Art, and also as president of the Zanesville Country Club. The ZCC golf course became his second home, a place where he found solace, friendship and three club championships. His love of the history and traditions of the game led him to hickory golf, which he felt represented the truest form of the game. He played competitively in Scotland, Ireland, and throughout the United States and he considered the venues he played, and especially the friendships he made, some of his most worthwhile experiences. He had three holes in one during his playing days and in 2022 was inducted into the ZDGA Hall of Fame.

As much as Dave loved his time on the golf course, his deepest devotion and loyalty were reserved for his wife and children to whom he gave so much (as he would sometimes remind them).

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Stephen Ellis, and his sister Cynthia Ellis Covert. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou (Tanoury) Ellis, whom he married September 2, 1972; his children Laura Ellis of Seattle and James (Sarah) Ellis of Jersey City; his brothers Vincent (Christy) Ellis, Drew Ellis, and Jason (Kelly) Ellis; sisters Diana Soutendijk and Lori Ellis; and many beloved relatives and friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Zanesville Concert Association Foundation, 2369 Oak Meadow Lane, Zanesville OH 43701, or online, whose programs brought enjoyment to Dave even as his disease progressed.
