Arvel Lawrence Palmer, 72 born in Steubenville, Ohio on February 25, 1948, went to be with his Lord on November 1, 2020. A 1966 graduate of Jefferson Union High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy after graduation. Marrying his hometown sweetheart Patricia Corso on July 11, 1969, they began their 51 year marriage with an exciting cross country adventure to California.
After a career in the Navy that spanned more than two decades, he retired as a Chief Petty Officer and moved his family from California to Dresden, Ohio. There, he began his second career as a Material Leader with Colgate Palmolive. While at Colgate, he completed the degree that he began at Purdue and graduated from the University of Findley with a BA in Business Management. He retired from Colgate in 2006 after 17 years and continued working with the company on a part time basis in the company store.
It was during this time that he and his family began attending and calling North Terrace Church of Christ their home. A man of strong convictions, he served his church faithfully as an Elder and on many committees and boards. He was also very active with the Gideon’s, serving as the treasurer and committed to sharing God’s word, one Bible at a time.
Throughout his entire life, he was most dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America. He grew up throughout the ranks, earning his Eagle Scout and becoming a member of the Order of the Arrow. He went on to become a leader for his son and a mentor to many others. He served the Muskingum Valley Council as the Council President, a Council Commissioner, Merit Badge Counselor, and Wood Badge Counselor. He was a life time member of the Order of the Arrow, a James E. West Fellow, as well as the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He firmly believed in the values taught through the scouting program and lived his life accordingly.
Arv is survived by his wife, Patricia Palmer; daughters, Amy Palmer and Ellen (Matthew) Murphy; son Philip (Angel) Palmer; grandchildren, Phoenix, Anthony (Jessica), Michael, Elijah, and Malachi; great-granddaughter Harmony; sisters, Flora Mae Tomaino and Linda (George) Huntington; and nieces and nephews, Jan, Jenny, Brandy, Justin, and Kaitlyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Casper Arvel and Marie (Huggins) Palmer; sisters, Nellie Poole, Eunice Donahue, and Rachel Creekbaum; and brothers, Clarence Wingo and John Palmer.
As a man who valued his faith and his family above all else, he was blessed to have spent his last day on Earth celebrating with both.
